Day of Atonement

Day of Atonement

Day of Atonement

Observed on the 10th day of the seventh month of the Israelite Calendar.

The day of Atonement is a day that is ordained by the Heavenly Father. For the Israelites to afflict their souls by not eating or drinking for an entire day. And to humble their hearts by giving prayers and praise unto the Lord. They also had to sacrifice an offering to receive mercy for the year’s sins. Leviticus 23:

v26- And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
v27- Also on the tenth day of this seventh month there shall be a day of atonement: it shall be an holy convocation unto you; and ye shall afflict your souls, and offer an offering made by fire unto the LORD.
v28- And ye shall do no work in that same day: for it is a day of atonement, to make an atonement for you before the LORD your God.
v29- For whatsoever soul it be that shall not be afflicted in that same day, he shall be cut off from among his people.
v30- And whatsoever soul it be that doeth any work in that same day, the same soul will I destroy from among his people.
v31- Ye shall do no manner of work: it shall be a statute for ever throughout your generations in all your dwellings.
v32- It shall be unto you a sabbath of rest, and ye shall afflict your souls: in the ninth day of the month at even, from even unto even, shall ye celebrate your sabbath.

Only the law of sacrifice was removed

False religions around the world are craftily trying to enter and deceive Israelite congregations. To teach that Christ destroyed God’s laws. Therefore Christ did away with the Day of Atonement. However, the Lord spoke thru the Apostle Paul and instructed Israel concerning what was abolished in the law.

Hebrews 10:

v1- For the law having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect.
v2- For then would they not have ceased to be offered? because that the worshippers once purged should have had no more conscience of sins.
v3- But in those sacrifices there is a remembrance again made of sins every year.
v4- For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins.
v5- Wherefore when he cometh into the world, he saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared me:
v6- In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin thou hast had no pleasure.
v7- Then said I, Lo, I come (in the volume of the book it is written of me,) to do thy will, O God.
v8- Above when he said, Sacrifice and offering and burnt offerings and offering for sin thou wouldest not, neither hadst pleasure therein; which are offered by the law;
v9- Then said he, Lo, I come to do thy will, O God. He taketh away the first, that he may establish the second.
v10- By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

The Apostle Paul explains in those verses that the Levitical laws of sacrifice were done away in Christ. Now concerning the day of Atonement wherein Israel was commanded to both sacrifice and fast what did Christ replace? THE SACRIFICE!

Now let’s read the historical account of what Paul did concerning the Day of Atonement.

Paul keep the Day of Atonement

Acts 27:

v1- And when it was determined that we should sail into Italy, they delivered Paul and certain other prisoners unto one named Julius, a centurion of Augustus’ band.
v2- And entering into a ship of Adramyttium, we launched, meaning to sail by the coasts of Asia; one Aristarchus, a Macedonian of Thessalonica, being with us.
v3- And the next day we touched at Sidon. And Julius courteously entreated Paul, and gave him liberty to go unto his friends to refresh himself.
v4- And when we had launched from thence, we sailed under Cyprus, because the winds were contrary.
v5- And when we had sailed over the sea of Cilicia and Pamphylia, we came to Myra, a city of Lycia.
v6- And there the centurion found a ship of Alexandria sailing into Italy; and he put us therein.
v7- And when we had sailed slowly many days, and scarce were come over against Cnidus, the wind not suffering us, we sailed under Crete, over against Salmone;
v8- And, hardly passing it, came unto a place which is called The fair havens; nigh whereunto was the city of Lasea.
v9- Now when much time was spent, and when sailing was now dangerous, because the FAST was now already past, [10th day of the 7th month/day of Atonement] Paul admonished them,
v10- And said unto them, Sirs, I perceive that this voyage will be with hurt and much damage, not only of the lading and ship, but also of our lives.

The apostle Paul kept the Day of Atonement in the faith of Christ proving the day itself was not abolished. Let’s continue to prove the point in a letter Paul wrote to the Israelites in Rome.

Paul wrote a letter to the Roman

Romans 5:

v8- But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
v9-  Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.
v10- For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.
v11- And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement.

What the sacrifice of animals could not do in reconciling us unto the FatherChrist did.
Paul understood that which is why he kept the day of the fast according to the law. Yet without sacrifice and there is no condemnation because of Christ.
Remember there is mercy in Christ. Anyone sick, on medication, or infants under age can make a decision to observe. Which no man can judge.
